About Runebound Rattery

Runebound Rattery was established in November 2006 by myself, Rebecca Annett and my aim is to provide healthy, friendly, and beautiful pet rats. 

I have kept rats as pets since I was 12 years old.  My first rat ended up being called "Baby"  I'm not usually one for babytalking pets, but she was just too adorable for her own good :)  She went everywhere with me, even to the beach! (thankfully she also knew to come when she was called)

I also tried my hand a breeding in my teens, but gave up in frustration after having to start giving my babies to petstores because there just wasn't enough of a demand for rats as pets back then. 

One of my boys that I bred and kept, Shane, lived to be around 4 years old.  He was a lovely natured Pink Eyed White,  at the end he was bald, blind and lame in his hindquarters but still loved life, demanding attention and eating!  I hope to have the same success with my rattery now that there is enough of a demand for pet rats for me to breed several varieties and have a number of litters a year with no problems in finding homes for my bubs, in fact it tends to be quite the opposite... not enough of the little furries to go around!

As my day job which pays the bills, I am employed as a legal secretary/bookkeeper for a legal firm specialising in Family & Property Law that is situated in Gardens, Cape Town.

Runebound is situated in the Cape Town area, South Africa and will ship to various other parts of the country.

The varieties I intend breeding are:

Blues: both Russian Blue, and Slate Blue as well as their dilutes;

Chocolate;

Marked rats: blazed, varigated, capped and black eyed white;

Black Eyed Siamese and Himalayan;

Marked Burmese;

Essex;

Dumbo ears in all above varieties;

I am also currently working on outcrossing the imported agouti dumbo line to the local fawn for some fawn dumbos sometime in the near future!
